In case you missed the latest updates from the pulpit, last month we had the largest distribution of diapers since we opened our doors to serve. 70 children received
diapers. Why the increase? Conversation with Audrey Brainerd from the SSK Old Lyme Pantry offered several possibilities: the family breadwinner may have had temporary work and is now in need; the cost of living has brought families back to the Food Pantry who had previously been inactive for many months. Both seem plausible as we all see food prices rise. Families purchasing power has decreased, with less money available for household goods, and any non-food items. The cost of gas to get to work is also a priority, and leaves families without funds to buy needed
essentials.
I opened my own cupboard and saw: laundry detergent; dryer sheets; disinfectants; cleaners for the bathroom and floors, etc.
I opened my closet and surveyed my clothes and shoes, underwear, socks, etc.
My hallway closet revealed paper towels, tissues, toilet paper, soap, toothpaste, shampoo, etc.
I wonder what we would see, if we opened the cupboards and closets of the families we serve.
How you gave helped:
Case of diapers $21.99
Each child receives a half case monthly. (about 65 diapers)
Case of baby wipes $18.99
Each child receives 1 package.
(12 packages per case)
Every month, approximately $12.60 is spent per child.
During the month of April, the
Diaper Bank asks you to join in the celebration of babies. A gift ofbaby wipes helps 12 children. A case of diapers assists 2 children. All gifts may be left near the hallway stairs leading to the Food Pantry. All monetary gifts sent to the church will be placed in the Diaper Bank account.
If you have any questions about the Diaper Bank, any of our volunteers would be happy to share their
experiences and responsibilities about serving in this ministry.
