Sunday, June 21st, 2026 at 10:00 am we’ll be celebrating Juneteenth in our worship service with a feast for the senses. Drums, dancing, and storytelling from the Afro-Caribbean world will be a part of our liturgy for the morning, as we welcome a team of Cuban drummers and musicians to our Meetinghouse. This service grows out of our research, begun six years ago after the murder of George Floyd, into the connections of Lyme and Old Lyme and the slave trade. Since that time, we have documented some 300 enslaved people who once lived in this town. And while we don’t know exactly, it’s likely that some variant of the practices we’ll encounter this Sunday would have been present in Old Lyme during the first 200 years of the town’s existence.
It will be a privilege to incorporate, once again, sacred ceremonies of the Afro-Caribbean world into our worship here in Old Lyme!
