Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Have you looked at the price of housing, lately? Just imagine the cost to put a roof over a family of seven! That’s the real challenge for the Popal family from Afghanistan, sponsored by the Lyme Old Lyme Refugee Resettlement Committee, which has worked to support this family as it navigates the language, customs and laws in its new home.

The Popals are happy in our community, and would like to stay, especially because their children are thriving in our excellent schools. All of the kids speak English now! Dad has a job at Big Y and Mom picks up occasional sewing work that she can do at home while caring for the baby, Sola, who was born here, in the U.S.

They are here, you may remember, because Dad worked with the US military in Afghanistan and his life was at risk after the takeover by the Taliban.

So, we are asking for your help. Specifically, we are looking for permanent housing for the Popals. So, if you happen to have a house or apartment to give or discount – in Old Lyme, but really anywhere in the immediate vicinity – it would make a huge difference for this family. It would also make for a wonderful Easter story. And if there are other ways you would like to get involved, please reach out to the Refugee Resettlement Committee.

Sincerely and with gratitude,
The Lyme/Old Lyme Refugee Resettlement Committee
